Contemporary Oak Stair Edinburgh New Town



Stairs are a unique piece of functional architecture within any buildings, and, like doors and windows, have become iconic in the way people think of them. Therefore it is very interesting to vary the design and create something slightly different, and make a real focal point within a new interior.
In this case, for an attic conversion in the centre of the Edinburgh’s Georgian New Town, I recessed the stairs’ supporting stringers within the wall structure, to give the stair a minimalist appearance. By thickening the treads I avoided the need for any vertical risers, allowing light to come through the stairs form a strategically place rooflight above, into the hall below.
